Mother's Day 2006 - Part 1

I decided to fly to New Orleans for Mother’s Day this year. I haven’t spent Mother's Day with Mom for at least 15 years. Sure, I always call her and usually manage to send something. And I do travel “home” for many holidays, Mother’s Day just has not been one of them. I decided over a month ago that this year I wanted to spend Mother’s Day with Mom in person. I also wanted to surprise her. Unfortunately, with her social calendar, the element of surprise became impossible and last week I had to go ahead and tell her I was coming. Still a surprise, just a couple of days early.

I also (half-jokingly) told her that I wanted to spend the day with her because "let’s face it, next Mother’s Day is going to be ALL ABOUT ME. "(She didn't take offense, in fact she laughed. Lucky for me, Mom has a sense of humor and is eager for another Grandchild. She also knows that I will always celebrate her no matter what. ) As I see it, here are the possible scenarios for Mother’s Day 2007:

1. We will be home from China. (Hey, a girl can dream can’t she!)
2. We will be in China
3. We will have our referral and will be waiting to travel
4. I will be curled up in the corner with a bottle of tequila. And a lime because, let’s face it, tequila without the lime….well, that’s just tacky.

So, regardless of how you slice it, I will be needing a little extra attention next year.

It was a great weekend. I got to see my parent's new house for the first time. It was really good to see them not living in their MOTORCOACH anymore. (My Dad corrected me when I referred to it as a trailer in this post.) Apparently there is a big difference.

Saturday we went to the local seafood joint and bought some boiled shrimp and crawfish and picked up some Abita Beer. In south Louisiana, nothing says Mother’s Day like boiled crawfish and Abita Beer. And we ate the shrimp and crawfish the way they are supposed to be eaten. In the backyard, on a picnic table covered with newspaper.

Sigh. Texans can make the 'Que, but we're crap at crawfish.

That's the way we pick crab!

Love your scenarios. Here's to hoping we aren't experiencing #4.
(But you are right, tequila without lime IS tacky! LOL!)

There is not much in the way of crawfish here in New Jersey, but I was lucky enough to hit a crawfish festival they host here once a summer. Damn, that stuff is good!

What's a crawfish? Seriously, I've never heard of it. Once I was in Chicago and I had crawdads at Joe's bee bop cafe on Navy Pier ... is that the same?

There are no crawfish in Montreal - I guess that could make a good business for someone!

Yes crawdads are the same. The correct spelling is actually crayfish but we pronounce it crawfish so that is how I spell it. They are a shell fish that look remotely like miniature lobster. Some people do not consider them edible but they are wrong.

Thanks for the explanation! I like any seafood so I'm sure I'd love it. Next time I'm in the south I'll give 'em a try.
If you are ever in Montreal you'll have to try our smoked meet sandwiches, tourtiere and poutine!
