I'm in my hotel room, flipping through the limited channels and trying to get some work done and I came across this show "Honey*we're*killing*the*kids" on TLC. Two words. TRAIN WRECK. Oh my goodness. (I know what did I expect with such a dramatic title.) Think Super Nanny but all about diet and exercise.
Is this show old news, am I the only one that hasn't seen it? Sure, it's mostly common sense, things we all know but don't necessarily always do. They study what your kids eat and also the amount of exercise they get vs. how much time they spend watching tv and playing video games. Then the whammy, they run this data through some fancy schmancy computer model and show what the kids will look like when they are 40. Scary. Not in an attractive vs. unattractive way but more about how healthy they will be. Who knows how accurate these computer models are but at 40, they looked at least 55. The main star/host is Dr. Lisa Hark, well known nutritionist. She takes the family through a three week program where they transform their eating and exercise habits. She showed how much sugar they should be consuming in a week and then showed how much they are actually consuming each week. Ouch. They just threw out all of their junk food - huge plastic bin full. Not good. Hmmm. I just realized I am basically watching a TV show about how bad it is to watch too much TV. Wait, is that the hotel gym calling....... Nope it's still the TV.
Have you seen this show?

They're just about to run it here in Aust. They keep advertising it. I won't watch it on principle! These are extreme cases (as are Biggest Loser, What you are is What you eat etc). I don't need to see that!
Now, pass me a bag of chips, I've got another 30 blogs to read yet!
I have watched it for several months and am amazed at how many parents do not cook or expose their children to good food( not always the food they want to eat. lol)
It this is what it takes to reach the masses of people, I guess it is no worse than a lot of the dribble we are fed on the TV
I've actually thought about doing a post just about this show. It is amazing to see how these families eat. I think though that the host/nutritionist is trying to do too much in a three week time period. I watched once when she asked the mother to go cold turkey on her smoking habit AND coffee addiction. Another episode she had the family, who ate only fried stuff and junk food, make sushi for dinner. Can you imagine how they reacted to that one! Even though it drives me nuts, I still watch it!! I suppose that I really want to see some of these families succeed.
I don't think these are extreme cases. Listening to others talk, and spending time with my friends, I am amazed at the amount of crapola they eat and their lack of exercise. One girl literally only buys soda and snacks at the grocery because they eat out every night. And by eating out I mean McD's! It is scary... maybe by calling attention to this, it will scare other families into being more healthy.
BTW, Biggest Loser is not an extreme case.... it could be the story of my husband and I very easily....
OMG I saw this once. Unbelievable. I think they make it overly dramatic but I think that there are a lot of people who don't teach their children about good nutrition.
My issue is that they make uneducated parents out to be "bad" parents. The only episode I saw not only insulted the person's ability to provide for her children, they insulted her culture.
I would much rather watch educational TV. You know, like, Project Runway which teaches me how to be on the up-and-up on fashion and Big Brother 7 - a study in human behavior. BWWAAHAAAHAA!
